Sports, Narnia & Fighting Obsolescence
Weekend Wrap Up Edition - Week 4/2025
Another eventful week in streaming land. Today, we’re looking at what’s truly driving subscriber growth—despite what execs may say during earnings’ call. Plus, we’ll check in on Narnia, a smaller European market making big waves in local content and Vidaa OS going long-term, to finally take a moment to reflect on which platforms are inching closer to profitability—and which still have a long journey ahead.
Now, onto this week's news…
🇫🇷 Brush Off On Your French Media Chronology
With the upcoming release of Narnia, Greta Gerwig’s adaptation for Netflix, which will get a theatrical release 💪 except in France?
👋 Au Revoir Netflix Subscriber Numbers
What a send off for this final earnings’ call where Netflix shared subscriber numbers: 💥 302M subscribers.
They down played the role of their sports events in the acquisition of 19M subs this quarter but Antenna estimates Jake Paul brought around 1.43M US subscribers while the NFL Xmas games are said to have brought around 656K US subs. Outside of the US, it will take more than American football and boxing to make sports a subscriber generator.
Our next episode on The Media Odyssey (out on Jan. 30th) will be a deep dive into Netflix’s Q4’24 earnings. We’ll go beyond the headlines because yes they kicked a$$ BUT as always we’re left with more questions than answers.
🙏🏻 You Gotta Love That Move by Vidaa OS
I want to change my TV on my terms, don’t you? Nothing like buying a TV and seeing no update whatsoever of the platform afterwards. Vidaa intends to build a long-term relationship with its consumers.
📺 Small But Mighty
The Belgian market just proved the world you can be a small but mighty content powerhouse, one that seduces local audiences so much that on streaming service, Streamz, Flemish programs hogged the service’s Top 10 as well as 80% of the platform’s total viewership.
