Introducing Above the Fold in partnership with Looper Insights. We look at who owns the streaming home screen, how they got there and what it is worth.
I'd be interested in your thoughts on the UKs freely platform. Your correct who owns the platform and landing screen wins and this is were freely really changes the dynamics.
In the UK most TV manufacturers will be install freely buy default. This means the home screen is really controlled by the UK core broadcaster eg BBC,.ITV etc...so your correct to get other services unless they agree to integrate with freely you need to open up there app.
So long term the owner of the platform on the TV and those who own the IP to the shows are really the winners
Now if Freely gets licensed to France / Germany etc...They could decide to make there local channels have the priority. That could impact Netflix etc... visibility
That’s a great example of broadcasters trying to grab that real estate and more. Freely goes deep into each OS it partners with. They have a list of certifications requirements (like they had before with Freeviewplay). Samsung never accepted them and doubt they will do now, a big miss as they’re the biggest in Europe. Another example in Germany where Magenta TV will be baked into Vidaa TV sets. Users will choose which OS they want their TV to run on. This 1st edition of Avove the fold is more focused on OS selling real estate to content providers.
