Why Interest Trumps Attention In Kids Media
With Jo Redfern on The Media Odyssey Podcast - Ep. 19
Forget shrinking attention spans. The real challenge? Kids’ interest spans. They're as curious, discerning, and unpredictable as ever.
In the latest episode of The Media Odyssey Podcast, my co-host
went for a younger mind (remember I’m a 45-year old boomer according to him) and brought in a new co-host, Jo Redfern, who helped launch global hits like Peppa Pig and steered content at the BBC, to break down what's really happening in kids media today. And no, I’m not jealous that Jo's subbing in for me. Not even a little bit. I’m taking the high road on this one unlike someone I know…Jo sheds light on why traditional broadcasters struggle to keep up, how Netflix and Disney+ are cleverly leveraging YouTube creators to hedge their bets, and why platforms like Roblox and Minecraft might just be the biggest storytelling playgrounds of the future.
My take? To thrive in this fragmented, multi-platform world, creators and broadcasters need to stop treating social media as just another marketing or distribution channel. It's now ground zero for developing, testing, and scaling hit IP. The old playbook won't cut it, and if you're still playing by those outdated rules, you're already losing.
Bottom line: Kids are rewriting the rules of content creation and distribution, and we should all be taking notes cos’ we’re old now.
