You own the trust but you rent the rails. That was the thesis of the keynote I gave at MTHCon at the end of September.
A European series reaches a viewer through a cloud, a feed, a video platform and a TV operating system.
All 4 are rented and the money follows them.
Europe won’t rebuild these 4 rails. What it does own is the living room, where 83% of Europeans most often watch video against 58% in the US (according to the 5th edition of the Living Room Study we conducted this year with RTL AdAllinace) and its audience’s trust. Europe could have a say when it comes to the 5th new rail: AI (only if it invests heavily in its regional champions and not just in Mistral).
Now I’m not delusional when it comes to the big S word: sovereignty. My keynote makes the case for selective sovereignty: pick the layers where you hold control (and have a clear edge) and choose (wisely) your partners for the rest. The playbook at the end shows how.
